person的复数形式究竟是persons还是people？我两种用法都看到过，现在有点混乱。
这是一个值得探讨的问题，这里先给出一个结论：在大部分情况下person的复数形式都是people，只有在一些法律和正式文件中才会使用persons作为person的复数形式。
person和people这两个词其实都来自拉丁语，但是它们的来源有所不同。Person来自于拉丁语persona，这一拉丁语最早的意思是“（演员戴的）面具”，后面演变出了“人类个体”的含义（an individual human）；people则来自于populus，意思是“民族，人民”。
person的复数形式在历史上也发生过一些变化。十七八世纪的一些语法学家认为当指代一个以上的人物时，person的复数形式应该使用persons而不是people，但这一观点后来没能成为语法标准。目前人们普遍使用people作为person的复数形式，只有在一些法律和正式文件中才会使用persons，之所以在这些文件中保留persons是因为从法律视角来看，每个涉案的人都是独特的，使用persons比使用集合名词people更能体现这种个体的独特性。比如：
(a) Four persons have been charged with the murder. 四人被控犯有谋杀罪。
(b) Persons who wish to adopt a child may contact their local social services department. 想收养孩子的人可以与当地社会公益部门联系。
除此之外，在一些固定短语中也有使用persons的例子，比如persons of interest（嫌疑人），missing persons（失踪人员）等等。
在日常写作以及考场作文中我们应该使用people作为person的复数形式，以免造成混乱。
除了上面的例子之外，还有一些英语单复数名词使用上容易产生出错，比如下面这几个：
(1) trousers
trousers是一个复数名词，后面的谓语动词要用复数形式，比如：His trousers are slightly too short. 要表示“一条裤子”不能说a trousers，要说a pair of trousers，同时，trouser不是一个名词，而是一个形容词，用来形容跟裤子相关的物件，比如“裤兜”是trouser pockets
类似用法的名词还有jeans/tights/shorts/pajamas等等。
(2) news
News虽然以”-s”结尾，但它是一个不可数名词，因此news后面的谓语动词要用单数，比如：
She now lives in exile, but the good news is that her words are heard over the world.
同时，news前面不能加a，比如我们应该说：This is good news. 而不能说：This is a good news. 如果要表达“一则新闻”，可以说：a piece of news
(3) species
Species单复数同形，单词后面的谓语动词用单数还是复数要根据主语来决定，比如：
(a) Seven species of birds of prey have been observed.
(b) A new species of spider has been discovered in a field in Cambridgeshire.
（4）media
Media是一个复数名词，它的单数形式是medium，因此media后面不能再加-s，但media后面的谓语动词可以使用单数或者复数形式，比如《牛津词典》就有这样的例子：
The media was / were accused of influencing the final decision. 媒体被指责左右了终审判决。
(5) police
Police是一个复数名词，它表示“警察”，而the police指的是“警察部门，警方”（an organization that tries to catch criminals and checks that people obey the law），police/the police作主语时后面的谓语动词都要用复数形式，比如：
(a) Police are still searching for the murder weapon.
(b) The police are also looking for a second car.
要表示“一名警察”，不能说a police，而要说a police officer, a policeman/a policewoman
(6) behaviour
不少同学喜欢在写作时使用behaviours来表示“行为”，比如：There can be many reasons for children’s bad behaviours. 但实际上behaviour在通常情况下都是一个不可数名词，不能加s，因此上面的句子应该改为：There can be many reasons for children’s bad behaviour.
只有在心理学、社会科学以及教育学等专业领域的论文中才可能用到behaviours这一复数形式，而在日常写作中我们应该避免使用这一复数形式。
